I have worked at Outside for almost nine years as the creative director. What's a creative director? (You and my mom wonder.) It means I work in the art department on page layout and design, communicating with designers and photographers and wearing out my mouse. But sometimes I get to go outside and work with some of the most talented athletes and photographers on the planet. And this is the part of my job I love the most.

What makes these photographs great to me is walls-down honesty mixed with physical strength, which in my book equals drop-dead sexy. It wasn’t easy to pick out 13 because so many great photographers have shot for us and so many elite athletes have appeared in our pages, but these pictures represent the best of both worlds, the most inspiring people we have had the good fortune to shoot paired with the most genius photographers I have had the huge honor of working with.

[update] This photo was chosen for the BEST OF SHOW exhibit for the International Photo Awards competition! The Best of Show exhibits a collection from amongst the nearly 350 winning submissions of this year's competition. The 2009 IPA Best of Show will debut at Splashlight Studios Soho, New York on Saturday, October 17, 2009.

My image of traceurs Brian Orosco and Tyson Ceka won Third Place in the Self Promotion category of the International Photography Awards, and my series of portraits of the March Fourth Marching Band won First Place in the Music category. You can see my work and the other winners a the IPA site.

In April I began a personal project documenting the alternative Circus Arts, with the goal to create a series of environmental and studio portraits of each performer (or group). I photographed Sy Parrish up in the trees–Sy is an amazing trapeze artist, and was interested in doing something site specific, and getting out of the studio. This project has just begun, and as Portland has no end of wonderful people doing wonderful things, I'm going to stay busy with this for a long time.

I was asked by Portland Monthly to photograph Nigel Jaquiss, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. Nigel has worked for the Willamette Week news weekly, breaking significant stories in the political landscape here in Portland. You can read the story and see Portland Monthly's selected image by hitting the newstand - it's a print exclusive. You can see some the current issue here.

Portland Monthly also optioned one my portraits of the March Fourth Marching Band. Their birthday party is coming up - this year there are 6 shows over 4 days, at Portland's Bossonova Ballroom - buy tickets now if you want to go.

And my 6 story tall banner of Al Harrington is still up at Madison Square Garden! And it's all over the subway system too! No word on how shoe sales are, but they are definitely making a visual impact! Plus there is some good buzz on the internets.

I was contacted by DRAFTFCB/Chicago to create an image campaign for the launch of Al Harrington's new shoe and apparel line Protege. Al Harrington (aka A3H) plays forward/center for the NY Knicks. Al, with Stephen Jackson (Golden Warriors), shoe designer Dallas Stokes and business partner Rodney Henry have created a new kind of athletic ware company - high performance gear for street pricing.

Kmart worked with DRAFTFCB and Protege to create a 6 month exclusive launch campaign around Al Harrington's A3H shoe.

andyBATTstudio was awarded the project to create a series of iconic photos of Al and his new show. I was given the freedom and support from my clients from Kmart, DRAFTFCB and Protege to create a fresh look and feel. My selected shots are featured above in the sports folio, and the image included here is currently hung outside of Madison Square Garden as a 4 story banner!

I photographed a holiday card for the McGrath brothers last week - Sean is an writer, director and actor, and every year he conspires with his brother to create something unique to send out to the family. Sean was in the cast for the upcoming movie Everyman's War, shot here in Portland, and was inspired to do a soldiers homecoming themed card this year. Jay Lance, the historical advisor on Everyman's War, provided authentic wardrobe and equipment for the shoot. I shot a variety of images for their card, and did some alternate shots for myself. I've also been experimenting with some new processing techniques and worked up a "two strip technicolor" technique with the help of Tom Ashe, digital guru and teacher at the SVA. For commercial projects, I spend a lot of time photographing smiling, happy people–so it's a nice change to work on something gritty.

I did some work for King Carlos (the band, not the King of Spain) yesterday. The answer to all your questions is "I answer your questions when you explain why there's a giant bunny in the picture". I've always been influenced in some degree by Tableaux photography, but the bunny has a lot of that going on for me. The rest of the shots will be up soon, but I wanted to share this right away.

I was invited by adidas Basketball to be a member of their SUPERSHOOT team this summer - a chance to photograph some of the best players in the game. The images just went live at the adidas.com site, and in retail outlets, so I can now share a portfolio of them with you. These are my selects, and my retouching. In order of appearance: Kevin Garnett/Boston Celtics; Tony Allen/Boston Celtics; Jordan Farmar/LA Lakers; Jason Kapono/Toronto Raptors; Jerry Stackhouse/Dallas Mavericks; Daequan Cook/Miami Heat; Dwight Howard/Orlando Magic; Josh Smith/Atlanta Hawks; Tim Duncan/San Antonio Spurs; Tracy McGrady/Houston Rockets. These guys were all amazingly cool to photograph - they had fun, they gave me enough time to get great shots and were professionals to the core.

Powerball Ads!

I photographed the current campaign for Oregon Lottery's Powerball Outdoor boards - if you are driving around on I-5, 84, or 26 you will probably see one of the 3 I did. I managed to grab some versions for myself - I would love the Lottery to have used one of these, but they probably wouldn't go for having L___ and G____ mowing down pedestrians as a politically correct theme.

I did a music mix for a group of friends, and needed an kickass cover to compete with all the cool designers and their use of fonts and shapes and stuff. So I reached into the portfolio bag, and brought out my boxing portfolio shoot. A tiny bit of enhancement in photochop, and blammo! an awesome cover!

Modern Fairy Tale?

I've been doing a lot of work for Best Buy lately - it's been fun stuff, working with great clients, crew, and talent. There was enough flex in the schedule to allow me 5 minutes here and there to stage some shots that had nothing to do with the job. These shots evolved over the week into a micro story - I'm not exactly sure what that story is yet, but it ended up with a 70's vintage suspense/thriller vibe. Adding the kid element makes me think it's a weird modern fairy tale, or a twisted version of one of those Disney style after school specials I grew up with.

LA Trip - Personal Work Series

I managed a little shooting for myself while I was in LA, shooting NBA stars for adidas (see NEWS to the right). Mostly it was from the passenger window as we cruised La Cinega up and down each day. The oil wells are ubiquitous, and the simplicity of the lines and subtlety of the elements of house, pump and utility pole work well for me.

I get to wander through my personal work every so often, and every time I get inspired - it's not a question if the work is amazing or ground breaking, or even if anybody else likes it - it's that something resonates within me about the work. I try to do the Winogrand thing - which in my humble interpretation is separating the act of taking the photo from the photo itself. These were shot at Silver Falls State Park in Oregon, on an overcast day in early June.

I did a portfolio shoot last week and I'm posting a bonus shot, before I post the portfolio shot. If you head over to the FREE tab to the right you can see the super awesome STICKER (that you can get for FREE) that the portfolio shot is based on. This shot is sweet, but has a completely different message, and will end up in a new portraits portfolio I'm working on.

Callaway Golf Pitch

I did a Callaway Golf pitch this April for Goodby Silverstein and Partners. The Callaway account was up for review, and several agencies were asked to pitch, to create a new look and style for the venerable golf company. I set out very early on a Saturday with a fancy new FTI driver and iron to create some interest in the staid world of 'golf photography'-which seems to primarily consist of either horrible 'training video' shots or bad photoshoppy car photography knockoffs. Goodby didn't win the pitch - from what I can gather, Callaway decided to retreat to the safety of exactly what they had been doing. While the account may not have fallen to Goodby (and to me) I did get to work with some good people at Goodby, and created a nice golf mini-folio. Here's two of the shots - more will be up in the main SPORTS portfolio soon, and the whole shoot will be available as a SUB ALBUM selection for SPORTS.

Keystone Light Campaign Live

Pledge allegiance to the smooth! I shot a nice series for Keystone Light through Avenue A. We had the run of Petereson's Convenience Store for a day - they were going to demo the whole interior the next day, so short of busting out the sledgehammer, we could do no wrong. The featured shot was taken on the MAX line in front of one of the other Peterson's - a great day of "what are you doing?" "Can I have some money?" "your in my way" and "Do you want to buy this cell phone? It doesn't work, but it's really cool". I'll be posting some of the work in the Quirky catalog soon. Sojourn Theater - BUILT - TBA

I got to play with some of the members of Sojourn Theater
this weekend. They will be performing as part of TBA (that's Time Based Arts to you non-portlanders) this year, and PICA needed some images to run in their sales materials. The performance is titled BUILT, and is a site specific theater piece that creates a discussion about housing, development, and who lives where. BUILT is still in being created, so we ran around a small section of South Waterfront and created 3 quirky images of a non-existent but soon to be realized play. I don't know how much influence my images will have on the piece, but it was a lot of fun, and I'm happy with the work.

I got to play DP, Gaffer and Director on this project, and sorta dived in not sure of exactly how it's all 'supposed' to work. I'm facing a nice big learning curve right now, but I've given myself 2 years to build a reel, and do some fun projects as DP and Director.

Studio Lighting Demo

I taught a lighting demo on Monday at my studio to a class of fine art photography students. I love the opportunity to do this stuff-creative lighting for the sake of creating lighting. I created 3 scenarios: a mixed light (tungsten 2k with broncolor strobes) setup with a strong backlight; an open 'gigantic north window' light; and a complicated setup with 5 strobes that ended up being called the "Jill Greenberg Close Encounters Lighting". My point was to show off studio lighting in a range from simple to complicated, and to get them to think 'bigger' - not bigger in the amount or size of the gear, but bigger in terms of how they approach lighting. It's important to learn and master the traditional lighting styles, and to emulate and learn from the modern masters (hey Jill Greenberg). But it's just as important to keep pushing the boundaries of what you know and what you think you can do, even on a limited budget with a limited amount of gear.

2008 March Fourth birthday party!

I had the great privilege of hanging out with the March Fourth Marching Band on their 5th birthday. I was dancing in the audience on March 3rd, and working the shots on the 4th. Truly a fun, wonderful bunch of people that know how to throw a party!
